We’re very excited to release the Flow of Creation video today on Halloween. The film originally premiered as a live visual for Celestial Son‘s concert on May 19th in Copenhagen this year. It was a particular treat to experience Celestial Son live, and see all the visual works presented at their show. The Flow of Creation was shot entirely in Stop Motion, and parts of the opening sequence of this film first appeared in Kilt Spirit, and has been expanded to the present film. A few shots in this film also previously appeared in the Figment Notebook, which we hope to release in the not too distant future. I am as always very lucky to have such amazing collaborators: Laura Beckmann, Chris Frandsen, Kindred Lansdown, Ted Haler and Cora Ripatti all made incredible contributions to what is often a painstaking process in shooting these stop motion works. And of course creating this film with Celestial Son’s amazing music is always a privilege and a wonderful collaborative experience. Our music video Death Wish, the third single taken from Celestial Son’s excellent album Saturn’s Return, is out today. Featuring performances by Rasmus Sjøgren (Divide and Conquer, All I Ever Wanted), Soren Castellanos (Monkey King), Cora Ripatti (Monkey King), and Chris Frandsen (Ligature Legislation). I am so lucky to be surrounded with such talented artists, and grateful that everyone was willing to take on this challenging, exciting shoot. Every character featured in this video has appeared in a previous stop motion film of mine, and we felt we wanted to try and push the envelope this time. Shot entirely in stop motion (over 17,000 stills in total were taken during shooting). This video was shot simultaneously with All I Ever Wanted (a 6000+ stills shoot), over a two week period. Additional photography was completed over a 4 week period. Saturn’s Return is out tomorrow! Go get it! See them live somewhere near you soon!

”So today we were supposed to present the next music video for the track Death Wish. The video is all ready to go but unfortunately due to some unforeseen circumstances we have been forced to push the premiere a little while.
But fear not, the plan is to premiere the video next week before the big release concert on Friday the 11th. at JAZZHOUSE.

Today is the release day of my new music video All I Ever Wanted for Celestial Son taken from their excellent forthcoming album Saturn’s Return. All I Ever Wanted was shot in Los Angeles as a sync-sound stop motion film comprising of over 5000 hand cranked shots. This was an intense shooting experience, not least for Rasmus, who had to lip sync the entire song, frame by frame, using a second channel on a separate video monitor as a source. In order for each frame to line up one after the other, Rasmus had to remain completely still and perform the entire song over a marathon 6+ hours performance. It was an enormous challenge and an extraordinary and intense experience.
The Danish music magazine Gaffa is premiering the video on their site and have written an article about the video here. The article is in Danish, and describes the circumstances of the shoot mentioned here.
Julian Simmons asked me if I wanted to contribute some form of visual interpretation of any poem of my choice, in celebration of national poetry month. You can see his humorous introduction to the series below, in the guise of his brilliant character Asgarth Wilson.
I had so much fun doing the first piece, the poem Oculus by Vladimir Nabokov, that I decided to do a second short piece, an installation video, based on a poem by J.G. Siminsky called The Seeds, which you can also see below. I am sure that Julian is open to many more poems, and readings, and you can contribute to his channel. I want to thank Cora Ripatti and Elaine Smith, as always, for their contributions and readings.
In more video news there should be a couple of videos shot all the way last year, coming out in the early summer. Also, in collaboration with Kura, we have decided to release a trilogy of interconnected collage videos which were featured on their tour in support of their album Halfway to the Moon.
Summer is over, if there were any leaves left in LA after the particularly dry and hot season, they would be turning. The last two weeks saw old forces returning in the form of a new Aphex Twin album!, and a new edition of Space Hulk from Games Workshop! (Try combining the experience, the crackle of vinyl is particularly cinematic as you flame genestealers in claustrophobic corridors.)
The immensely talented author Michael Marshall (Smith) has finally, FINALLY I say, had some of his incredible body of work translated to the screen and the result is The Intruders TV series from BBC America. Now they should just go ahead and produce his adaptation of Clive Barker’s Weaveworld. Speaking of Clive Barker, the gentleman has had three art shows open here in LA this year (or was it four?), and those paintings are wonderful to experience up close, thick paint and scratches, a sight to behold. Come Halloween there will be a release of Barker’s own extended cut of Nightbreed,which is also going to be some occasion.
There should be two music videos coming this year, or when labels decide to hit the go button. They were immense fun to make. They will probably be the last two stop motion films for some time. (I say this every time and then someone shares something too excellent to resist.) Hopefully those previous seven films can be collected at some point. Right now I am working with immensely talented and supportive producers and we are going to go away and make something exciting, and then come back here at some point.
April 4th, 2014 marks the Official launch of K I L L T S P I R I T and release of the first design – the “Sarsaparilla” cuff.
The film was Conceptualized & Directed by Karim Ghahwagi, and features appearances by Ted Haler and Kindred Lansdown, with Music & Sound Design by Cora Ripatti.
I am very fortunate to be surrounded by such talented, creative and generous artists. Together the team worked to create the film using over 10,000 stills. All the old sewing machines, pin needles and clocks were animated frame by frame to give them the illusion of life. The house in the beginning of the film was created using three different houses, and the surrounding landscape was similarly photographed and assembled from locations in Denmark and Los Angeles. All live action sequences featuring Ted Haler and Kindred Lansdown were also shot in stop motion to integrate them into the universe of the film, and they both created tremendous performances. We also shot a presentation of the Sarsaparilla Cuff using the same technique.
